Giambattista Valli A/W 2010
Nearly everything in this collection was beautiful even the color choice of the backdrop curtains. The neutral colors really make the garments pop. The eye makeup was also perfection. It wasn't average but it wasn't outrageous. Applying eyeliner slightly lower than normal is a technique all style conscious women can imitate without looking like freak shows. It is also a fantastic way to accentuate your cheek bones. If you aren't daring enough to draw black liner in a location that is socially unacceptable, try a light grey, pale purple, white or blue. Blend using bronzer, blush, and a shimmer stick to make the line more subtle.
Within the collection, I loved the pops of orange. Orange is a strong color but when it is applied to a garment correctly, it can be stunning. (Note: There are really no rules when it comes to creativity) With that said, if a designer is looking to create pieces that have wearability, there are points in time when some design risks should be avoided due to lack of understanding by your target audience. For example, orange patent leather pants would probably not be understood by many at this time. That's not to say 5 years from now, they couldn't be a huge hit. That's the fun thing about fashion, you never know what is coming next.
Another highlight of this collection I feel is noteworthy is the play on textures. Playing with volume is a huge trend right now (ie: leggings and an oversized cape/sweater) so translating that to playing with textures is a smart way to show something new without doing a 180 from what is currently fresh. Another noteworthy idea Valli featured is to accessorize under a sheer fabric. He even took a gold bow belt and put it under the chiffon on 7th dress down. What an exciting new way to showcase your baubles. Don't be scared of all that flashy costume jewelry. For a sexy and understated look, layer it under a sheer blouse and pair with a lacy bra.
